Mixenden + Moor End My 4x4 went to the garage this morning for a full service, kids at school, wife had gone out for the day, so I had the full day to myself. I grabbed my rifle, and headed to the local woods (5 minute walk) I spent half an hour checking my scopes were set right, then went looking for squirrels. I watched and counted how many there were. I heard a couple crashing through the branches as I slowly walked through the wood, then I stopped for a while, sat at the base of a large Pine and just watched for squirrels. I counted 9 squirrels while sat watching them, then I headed back through the woods, looking for the ones I'd heard in the branches. I spotted the 1st one sat on the path, about 20 yards away, he sat upright, looked at me, and as I raised the rifle he jumped onto the tree trunk at the side. He poked his head round the other side to watch me... big mistake... he fell to the floor with a single shot in the head. I crept passed him, keeping my eyes peeled for another. The flicking of a tail on a branch caught my eye, so I took my aim and another single head shot brought #2 crashing to the ground. I collected the 2 squirrels, and lay them on a branch so I knew where they were, and continued my hunt. I crept around a large patch of Bramble, watching the floor, trees, and Bramble for any movement. I didn't see any, so headed back to the 2 squirrels. #3 was sat in the tree I'd laid the squirrels in, her tail was flicking like mad, and she edged closer to her dead friends. She paused too long and another head shot put her in the bag. I collected the 3 squirrels, and was heading back out of the wood, when #4 appeared from behind a tree trunk. I dropped the 3 I was carrying, and he hid again, then slowly peeped round the trunk at me. I slid the rifle to my shoulder, and gently squeezed the trigger and #4 fell to the floor. I headed back, left the squirrels at home, and headed to a local farm (5 minute walk in opposite direction of woods) I walked across the field towards the main warren, and as I crept into the gulley I didn't see a single rabbit. I crept a bit closer, in case there were any sat on the right-hand bank, and I saw 2 foxes sat watching the Nettle patch for rabbits. The dog bolted as soon as he saw me, but the vixen froze. Too late to run now... a single pellet struck her right between the eyes, and she slumped on the spot. I quickly went to the wall where the dog had jumped over, but he was long gone. So I collected the vixen, and headed back home. She's now in the freezer waiting to go the taxidermist, and the squirrels are waiting to be dressed for the BBQ this weekend |
